DIY Mother’s Day Cupcake Bouquet for Mum

Mum Cupcake Bouquet

I’ve been in a decorating mood lately despite a fractured elbow. Yes — that fall from my new birthday bike left me with a fractured elbow and plenty of pain. The doctor recommended no cast and encouraged gentle movement while avoiding anything that risks re-injury, so I’ve been careful. Even so, I haven’t let it stop me from crafting a few simple, cheerful treats that are perfect for Mother’s Day.

While experimenting with cupcakes I already had on hand, I came across a charming idea on Pinterest: cupcakes transformed into a floral bouquet. They are simple, striking, and child-friendly — a perfect project for kids, grandchildren, or anyone who wants a pretty, edible gift. If you haven’t marked your calendar yet, Mother’s Day is May 11th.

These cupcakes become miniature mums by using halved marshmallows as petals and a small candy in the center for the flower core. A short piece of green licorice placed at the base of each cupcake gives the illusion of stems, so when arranged together they read like a bouquet. Each cupcake takes about 20–30 minutes to decorate, and the result is delightful and surprisingly professional-looking.

These are great for Mother’s Day, bridal showers, baby showers, or any celebration where you want a pretty, portable dessert. They make a lovely centerpiece, a thoughtful edible gift, or a fun family activity. Younger decorators can help dip the marshmallows and place them on the icing, while older kids can manage the full assembly.

I made a short video showing the process because these cupcakes look so impressive yet are very easy to create.

Mum Cupcake Bouquet

Yield: 12 cupcakes

A simple, beautiful cupcake bouquet that’s perfect for Mother’s Day or any celebration. These floral cupcakes use marshmallow petals, sanding sugar or sprinkles for color, and green licorice to create stems for an edible bouquet.

Ingredients:

  • 12 cupcakes (homemade or from a box mix)
  • icing of choice (buttercream, cream cheese, or canned frosting), any color
  • sanding sugar or small sprinkles in coordinating colors
  • miniature marshmallows
  • small candy for centers (candy ball, Good & Plenty, or a jelly bean)
  • green licorice for stems

Directions:

  1. Prepare the marshmallow petals: cut approximately 40 miniature marshmallows in half on the diagonal and place the halves in a bowl.
  2. Pour sanding sugar or small sprinkles into a shallow container for dipping.
  3. Spread a thin, even layer of icing on the top of a single cupcake. Work one cupcake at a time so the icing remains tacky and the marshmallows will adhere.
  4. Dip each cut marshmallow half into the sanding sugar or sprinkles, then place the sugared side facing inward against the icing at the outer edge of the cupcake. Continue around the edge to form the first row of petals.
  5. Build the flower by adding another row of marshmallow petals in front of the first, overlapping slightly so the petals look full and dense. Pack the marshmallow halves close together, continuing until you leave a small open spot in the center.
  6. Place a small candy (a candy ball, Good & Plenty, or a jelly bean) in the center to create the flower’s core.
  7. Repeat the process for the remaining cupcakes. Once all cupcakes are decorated, arrange them on a platter in a cluster to resemble a bouquet.
  8. Finish the presentation by laying pieces of green licorice next to the base of each cupcake to act as stems. You can also tie identical-length strips together with ribbon for an even more bouquet-like look.
  9. Storage tip: keep decorated cupcakes refrigerated if using perishable icing (like cream cheese). For short-term serving (a few hours) at room temperature, choose buttercream or stabilized frosting.
  10. Variation ideas: use different sprinkle colors to create multi-colored mums, substitute thin gummy strips for licorice stems, or add a small paper wrap around the cupcake bases to resemble a florist’s bouquet wrap.

Enjoy these lovely, easy-to-make mum cupcakes — a sweet and thoughtful way to celebrate someone special.
