This crispy tofu recipe is quick, simple and incredibly tasty. Ready in around 10 minutes with just a minute of prep, it’s a healthy, versatile source of plant-based protein that works brilliantly in stir-fries, noodles, salads or as a canapé with a dipping sauce. If you don’t have an air fryer, you can use a hot oven instead.

Why You Will Love This Recipe
- Super quick and easy – minimal prep (about 1–2 minutes) and roughly 10 minutes cooking time in an air fryer. Air frying crisps the tofu all over without constant turning.
- Healthy and delicious – simple, wholesome ingredients give a satisfying texture that pairs beautifully with tamari, dipping sauces or a squeeze of lemon.
- Plant-based and gluten-free – suitable for vegan and gluten-free diets when you use gluten-free starch and tamari or soy alternatives.
- Pantry-friendly – firm or extra-firm tofu keeps well in the fridge, making this an easy go-to source of protein for quick meals or snacks.
This is one of my family’s favourite recipes. It’s a lifesaver on busy evenings: while the tofu crisps in the air fryer you can quickly stir-fry vegetables and cook noodles for a healthy dinner in 15–20 minutes.

What is Tofu?
Tofu is made from soy curd and is a nutritious, low-calorie source of plant protein. It comes in several textures: silken (soft and creamy) and medium/firm/extra-firm (denser and better for frying or baking). Because tofu is naturally mild, it benefits from marinades, coatings or flavorful sauces to boost taste.
Medium, Firm and Extra-Firm Tofu
Medium, firm and extra-firm tofu are sold refrigerated, usually vacuum-packed in water. Pressing these varieties removes excess moisture and gives a firmer, chewier texture — ideal for pan-frying, baking or air-frying. They work well in stir-fries, slices for baking or smoked tofu dishes, and when coated in starch they make crisp tofu nuggets like in this recipe.
Silken Tofu
Silken tofu is soft and custardy in texture and is often sold in shelf-stable packaging. It’s great in soups, blended into sauces, used for creamy vegan desserts or lightly cubed for gentle dishes. It isn’t suitable for this crispy recipe because it won’t hold its shape.

Nutrition
This recipe balances healthy cooking with nutrient-dense ingredients. Tofu provides high-quality plant protein and essential minerals, while chia seeds add fibre and plant-based omega-3s. Together they make a nourishing, satisfying snack or meal component.
Tofu
Tofu is rich in protein and contains essential amino acids, calcium, iron and B vitamins. When included as part of a balanced diet, tofu contributes valuable nutrients and can support heart and bone health.
Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are tiny but nutritionally powerful, offering omega-3 fats, fibre and minerals. In this recipe they also help absorb moisture and contribute to a crisp outside on the tofu cubes.
Main Ingredients
- Firm or extra-firm tofu – silken or soft tofu won’t hold together; medium tofu may not crisp up as well.
- Potato starch – creates a light, crunchy coating. Tapioca, arrowroot or cornstarch can be used instead.
- Chia seeds – add crunch, nutrients and help absorb moisture.
- Oil – a little oil helps browning and helps the seeds and seasoning stick. Use neutral oils like grapeseed or canola for high heat; olive oil is fine for milder dishes.
- Garlic powder, salt and pepper – basic seasoning; feel free to add onion powder, seaweed flakes or curry powder for variation.
Please see the recipe card below for quantities and full instructions.

Chef’s Tips
- Always use firm or extra-firm tofu for the best texture.
- Cut cubes evenly so they cook uniformly.
- Handle the cubes gently when coating with starch to keep them intact.
- Press the tofu if you prefer a denser, chewier interior (see instructions below).
How To Press Tofu
To press tofu, drain the block and place it on a plate lined with folded kitchen towels. Cover with another plate and place a heavy object on top (a cast-iron pan or canned goods work well). Leave for around 20–30 minutes, periodically draining the liquid and replacing very wet towels. This method removes excess moisture and firms the tofu for crispier results. A purpose-built tofu press is a convenient alternative if you often press tofu.
Serving Suggestions
Crispy air-fried tofu goes with countless dishes: add it to stir-fries, noodle bowls, salads, buddha bowls or tacos. Serve as a snack or canapé with tamari, kimchi sauce, satay or a spicy mayo for dipping. Kids also enjoy these with ketchup or barbecue sauce.

Substitutions
- Swap chia seeds for sesame seeds for a tasty variation (they won’t absorb liquid the same way but are delicious).
- If you don’t have potato starch, use tapioca, cornstarch or arrowroot.
- For a heartier coating, wholegrain flours like brown rice flour can be used, though the texture will differ from a light, tempura-like crisp.
- Add flavour with dried seaweed flakes, red pepper flakes or a drizzle of tamari or liquid aminos after cooking.
Making Ahead and Leftovers
If preparing in advance, undercook slightly and reheat in the air fryer for a few minutes to crisp before serving. Store cooked tofu in a covered container in the fridge for a couple of days and re-crisp in the air fryer or oven before eating. Leftovers are excellent added to salads or stir-fries.
Crispy Air Fryer Tofu FAQs
Use a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F). Arrange the prepared tofu in a single layer on a lined baking tray and bake for about 15–20 minutes, turning once, until golden. Alternatively, pan-fry the cubes in hot oil, browning each side.
Pressing is optional. It yields a firmer, chewier interior, but the tofu is also delicious with a crispy exterior and a softer centre.
Chia seeds add crunch and nutrition but aren’t essential. You can omit them or substitute sesame seeds.
