I’ve wanted to recreate a copycat version of these classic cosmic brownies for a long time, and I was determined to get the texture and flavor just right. These brownies aim to capture that nostalgic experience: fudgy, rich chocolate with a glossy topping and colorful candy accents. They’re simple to make and come together quickly, so they’re perfect for a last-minute dessert or for preparing ahead of time.

Nut-free, Vegan, and Paleo-Friendly Brownies
These brownies are nut free thanks to the SunButter used in the batter, and they require no flour in the base, which keeps the texture dense and fudgy rather than cakey. The frosting uses dairy-free chocolate chips melted with full-fat coconut milk, keeping it vegan and free of dairy and nuts. The colorful chocolate candies shown are dairy free and nut free as well; however, you can use any allergy-safe candies or even natural sprinkles. I did not include an exact measurement for the candies—simply decorate to your preference.
Because this recipe uses no eggs or dairy, it’s fully vegan. The combination of SunButter, coconut oil, cacao powder, and maple syrup produces a deeply chocolatey, moist brownie that closely resembles the original treat but with cleaner ingredients.

These brownies are very quick to prepare: everything for the batter is mixed in one bowl and the pan goes into the oven in less than 10 minutes. The frosting is just two ingredients—melted dairy-free chocolate chips and coconut milk—so it’s effortless to finish the bars. They’re excellent fresh, and they also keep well in the refrigerator, which makes them a convenient make-ahead dessert.
Although SunButter is the main ingredient in the batter, these brownies do not taste overwhelmingly of sunflower seed butter. Instead, the final flavor is a rich chocolate brownie that is dense and fudgy rather than cakey, which is exactly the goal for a cosmic brownie-style square.

I love little personal touches—like this cutting board my boyfriend made me—but the real star here is the brownie. If you enjoy the texture and flavor of the classic cosmic brownie, these paleo vegan versions are an excellent, moister alternative that aligns with gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan diets.

If you’re looking to try other brownie variations, here are a few ideas to explore: buckeye-style brownies made with a similar nut-free approach, salted caramel brownies for a sweet-salty contrast, German chocolate-inspired brownies with coconut and pecan-style textures (using allergy-safe substitutes), or topping brownies with a paleo cookie dough layer. Each variation plays with texture and topping while keeping a dense, fudgy base.

Paleo Vegan Cosmic Brownies
Author: Jessica DeMay
Prep Time: 10 minutes • Cook Time: 12 minutes • Servings: 16
Ingredients
Brownies
- 1 1/4 cup SunButter
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/3 cup maple syrup
- 1/3 cup cacao powder
Frosting
- 1 1/3 cups dairy-free chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup full-fat coconut milk
Topping
- Dairy-free chocolate candies or allergy-safe sprinkles, to decorate
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×9-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving a slight overhang to lift the brownies out later.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the SunButter, melted coconut oil, vanilla, and maple syrup until smooth. Add the cacao powder and mix thoroughly so there are no lumps. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
- Bake for about 12 minutes, or until the edges are set and a thin crust forms on top. The center should still be fudgy. Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan before adding the frosting.
- To make the frosting, gently melt the dairy-free chocolate chips with the coconut milk in a double boiler or in the microwave in short intervals, stirring every 20–30 seconds until smooth. Stir until glossy and even.
- Pour the frosting over the cooled brownies and spread to cover. Immediately sprinkle the dairy-free chocolate candies or sprinkles over the top before the frosting sets.
- Chill the brownies in the refrigerator until the frosting firms, then cut into squares. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to several days.
