Homemade hummus is one of the simplest and most rewarding dips to make. With just a few pantry staples and a high-speed blender like a Vitamix, you can create a creamy, fresh hummus in minutes. We always keep a batch in the fridge — it disappears fast, so making a double batch is often worth the extra effort.
Chickpeas and hummus are staples in our kitchen. We enjoy them plain as a snack, dolloped over salads (especially a simple Greek-style salad), spread on sandwiches, or served with roasted vegetables. Chickpeas are also terrific when roasted with spices or formed into falafel and paired with hummus for dipping.

I’ve thought about why hummus and chickpeas are so appealing and came up with a few clear reasons. First, chickpeas are an excellent source of plant-based protein and a nutritious, filling ingredient. Second, hummus is endlessly customizable — you can control the texture, the garlic, the lemon brightness, and the salt level to suit your taste. For me, having that control and the ability to make a super creamy hummus is what keeps me making it at home.
What makes chickpeas so good for you?
Chickpeas are a versatile and healthy choice. A few of their benefits include:
- Good source of plant-based protein
- Contain several important vitamins and minerals
- High in fiber, which supports healthy digestion
- Very versatile — use them roasted, mashed, pureed, or whole
- Inexpensive and easy to prepare from canned or dried beans
Why make hummus at home?
The biggest reason to make hummus at home is control. Store-bought hummus can be good, but homemade allows you to adjust everything: the creaminess, the garlic intensity, the acidity from lemon, and the amount of tahini. You can also experiment with flavors — roasted red pepper, roasted garlic, herbs, or even beets — to create unique variations.

Making hummus really is easy: chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, garlic, water, and a pinch of salt. A blender or food processor does the heavy lifting — in about five minutes you’ll have a smooth dip that’s healthier and fresher tasting than most store-bought options.

Tips and tricks
- Rinse canned chickpeas thoroughly to remove excess sodium and any canned flavor. A mesh strainer and a minute under running water works well.
- Don’t skip the tahini unless you need to avoid sesame — it provides richness and a nutty depth. If you omit it, taste and adjust lemon, garlic, and salt to compensate.
- For extra creaminess, peel the chickpeas by rubbing them between your fingers or cook dried chickpeas until very tender. Alternatively, add a small amount of ice-cold water or olive oil while blending.
- Serve hummus with fresh vegetables, pita or crackers, as a sandwich spread, or use it as a sauce for grain bowls and roasted vegetables.
- Try finishing the hummus with a drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkle of smoked paprika, or “everything” seasoning for added flavor and visual appeal.
If you’re looking for more simple purees and spreads to try, consider basic purees like black bean puree, avocado puree, or sweet corn puree as alternatives or complements.
