Ingredients

  • 1 medium orange, peeled and seeded
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1 small frozen banana, peeled and sliced
  • 5 frozen strawberries
  • 1 cup chopped kale
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1/2–3/4 cup water (adjust for desired thickness)

Instructions

  1. Place the softer fruit (banana, strawberries, orange) at the bottom of the blender, then add blueberries, chopped kale, and chia seeds.
  2. Add 1/2 cup water to start. Blend on high until fully smooth, pausing to scrape down the sides as needed. Blend longer if your blender is less powerful.
  3. Thin with the remaining water until you reach your preferred consistency. Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Notes & Tips

This speckled effect comes from chia seeds and the skins of blueberries mixing into the smoothie while the base stays a soft, warm tone thanks to strawberries, banana, and orange. For a creamier smoothie, substitute some or all of the water with plant-based milk such as almond, oat, or soy. To boost healthy fats, add a teaspoon of coconut oil or a tablespoon of nut butter.

Make-ahead tip: Prepare the fruit and kale in freezer bags for quick blending in the morning. If you prefer a colder, thicker drink, use more frozen fruit and less water. For extra sweetness, try a touch of maple syrup or a couple of pitted dates, but the ripe banana usually provides ample natural sweetness.

Why Choose a Green Smoothie for Breakfast?

Green smoothies blend leafy vegetables like kale with fruit to create a drink that’s easy to digest and rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. This Speckled Strawberry Smoothie balances sweetness and greens so you get flavor without masking the benefits of the kale. Blueberries and chia seeds add antioxidants and texture, while the banana and orange provide natural sweetness and potassium.

About Smoothie Prep and Variations

Customize this recipe to suit dietary needs and flavor preferences. For higher protein, add a scoop of plant-based protein powder or a spoonful of nut butter. For a lower-sugar option, reduce the banana or use more greens and a few extra frozen berries. If you want a thicker, spoonable smoothie, use less water or more frozen fruit. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours, though freshly blended smoothies are best enjoyed immediately.
