Sparkling Pomegranate Rum Punch Cocktail Recipe

Sparkling Pomegranate Tangerine Rum Punch for the Holidays

Last weekend Shawn and I went for a walk and saw crews installing the holiday lights in the park. It felt strange — this year has dragged in some ways, but the holidays arrive faster than expected. I could have sworn we only just took our lights down.

Our family sticks to a very traditional holiday dinner; changing the main course would probably cause an uprising. Drinks and appetizers, though, are where I like to experiment. A bright, seasonal cocktail can do a lot to set the mood and make a gathering feel festive without altering family favorites on the menu.

Sparkling Pomegranate Tangerine Rum Punch for the Holidays

This sparkling pomegranate tangerine rum punch is exactly the sort of seasonal cocktail that keeps a party lively. It suits Thanksgiving through New Year’s and works equally well for a cozy girl’s night, game night, or any celebration when you want something pretty and easy to serve. The bright tangerine and tart pomegranate balance the caramel and spice notes of dark rum to create a punch that feels both festive and relaxed.

I’m partial to rum punches because you can make a large pitcher in advance. That takes the pressure off hosting — no one stays tied to the bar while guests circulate. A single big batch also saves space on a small kitchen counter and gives a consistent flavor so every cup tastes the same. If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, substitute the rum with a spiced tea or extra sparkling juice for a similarly lively, alcohol-free punch.

A simple rum-punch formula helps you riff on flavors: think of the ratio as parts sour, sweet, spirit, and a fizzy finish. For this recipe I simplified the sour and sweet by using tangerine lemonade as a base, which keeps the punch bright and citrusy without needing separate sweeteners. Pomegranate juice adds depth and a festive color, while cranberry seltzer brings a light, bubbly finish and a gentle tang.

For depth and complexity, a few dashes of bitters are an optional but welcome addition. Black walnut bitters give a warm, nutty note that complements spiced rum; Angostura bitters will provide a classic aromatic backdrop. Garnish with fresh mint and a few pomegranate arils for contrast and texture. Serve the punch over ice, or keep it chilled in the refrigerator and ladle into glasses just before guests arrive.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups spiced rum
  • 2 cups lemonade (tangerine lemonade preferred)
  • 1 cup tangerine juice (or orange juice)
  • 3 cups cranberry seltzer
  • 1 cup pomegranate juice
  • 5–10 dashes black walnut or Angostura bitters (optional)
  • Fresh mint and pomegranate arils, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large pitcher or punch bowl, combine the lemonade, tangerine juice, rum, cranberry seltzer, and pomegranate juice. If you’re using bitters, add them now and stir gently to combine.
  2. Chill the punch in the refrigerator until ready to serve. If you plan to serve immediately, add a few ice cubes when ladling into cups to keep the balance of flavors from diluting too quickly.
  3. To serve, place a teaspoon of pomegranate arils in the bottom of each wine glass or punch cup, then fill with punch. Garnish each glass with a sprig of fresh mint.

Tips and Variations

  • Make it non-alcoholic by replacing the rum with a spiced black tea or additional tart cranberry or pomegranate juice and reduce the seltzer slightly for balance.
  • For a lighter boozy option, reduce the rum by half and increase the seltzer or lemonade to taste.
  • Prepare the base (lemonade, tangerine juice, pomegranate juice) ahead of time and add the seltzer just before serving to keep the fizz lively.
  • Substitute plain sparkling water for cranberry seltzer if you prefer less cranberry flavor; add a splash of cranberry juice for color.
  • Store leftover punch chilled for up to 24 hours; stir gently before serving. Avoid adding ice to the stored punch to prevent dilution.
