Christmas Rice Krispie Treats Recipe

Servings: 8

Total Make Time: 20–25 minutes

Ingredients for Christmas Rice Krispie Treats

  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 3 cups mini marshmallows
  • 3 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 2 tsp red food coloring (or a natural red dye alternative)

Ingredients for Frosting

  • ½ cup premade frosting
  • 1–2 drops green food coloring (or a natural green dye alternative)
  • 1 zip-top bag or piping bag
  • 1 star piping tip (optional, Wilton #21 suggested)

Instructions for Christmas Rice Krispie Treats

  1. In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the mini marshmallows and stir constantly until fully melted and smooth. Stay attentive—marshmallows can burn quickly.
  2. Remove the pot from the heat. Add the Rice Krispies cereal and fold gently with a spatula until the cereal is evenly coated with the marshmallow mixture.
  3. Add 2 teaspoons of red food coloring and continue folding until the color is evenly distributed. Adjust the amount if you prefer a deeper or lighter red tone.
  4. Prepare an 8-inch cake pan by spraying with nonstick spray or lining it with parchment paper. Transfer the mixture into the pan and press it evenly into the bottom with a clean, greased hand or a spatula. Lightly greasing your hands prevents the treats from sticking.
  5. Refrigerate for 10–15 minutes to firm the mixture slightly before cutting and decorating.

Frosting and Decorating

  1. While the treats are chilling, mix about ½ cup of premade frosting in a small bowl with 1–2 drops of green food coloring until you reach the desired shade.
  2. Fit a piping tip into a piping bag, or use a zip-top bag and snip a small corner. Fill the bag with the green frosting.
  3. Once the Rice Krispie layer has set, run a butter knife or small spatula around the edges to loosen it from the pan. Transfer to a cutting board and slice into 8 triangular pieces, similar to cutting a pie.
  4. Pipe a small line of green frosting across the base of each triangle and add a small star or rosette at the top to create a tree or hat look. If you don’t have a piping tip, you can use a spoon to dot the frosting on each piece.
  5. Serve immediately or store for later (see storage tips below). Enjoy these festive, kid-friendly treats!

Tips for Success

  • Grease your hands or use a spatula when pressing the mixture into the pan to avoid sticking.
  • Stir marshmallows constantly as they melt and remove from heat as soon as they’re smooth to prevent burning.
  • If your mixture becomes too stiff while working, warm it gently for a few seconds to soften.
  • Use a serrated or nonstick knife lightly greased with cooking spray for cleaner slices.

Storage and Serving Suggestions

Store finished Rice Krispie treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days for the best texture. For longer storage, refrigerate for up to five days; bring to room temperature before serving for a softer bite. These treats pair nicely with hot cocoa, coffee, or a festive holiday beverage.
