Grilled Boston Style Hot Dogs with Caramelized Onions

I love hot dogs—any style, any time. After making grilled Chicago-style and Seattle-style hot dogs recently, I wanted to try a grilled Boston hot dog next. They’re simple to prepare, packed with flavor, and not shy about toppings. Use sturdy deli-style buns to hold everything together and choose good-quality hot dogs for the best result.

Grilled Boston Hot Dogs

The Perfect Combination

A Boston hot dog gets its characteristic balance from warm baked beans, tangy hot dog relish, chopped white onion, yellow mustard, and ketchup. Each bite delivers a pleasing mix of sweet, savory, and acidic notes while remaining an uncomplicated sandwich. These ingredients travel well, so you can pack them in a cooler and grill at the park for a quick, satisfying meal.

For this version I used Hebrew National jumbo beef franks—any well-flavored beef or beef/pork frank will work. Choose buns that are soft but sturdy enough to handle a generous scoop of beans and toppings.

Grilled Boston Hot Dogs

Ingredients

  • 4 hot dogs (grilled)
  • 4 hot dog buns (warmed or steamed if desired)
  • 1 cup baked beans (warmed)
  • 1 small white onion, chopped
  • Hot dog relish, to taste
  • Prepared yellow mustard
  • Ketchup

Instructions

  1. Grill the hot dogs until heated through and nicely browned. If you like, cut a shallow slit down the length of each hot dog before grilling so it opens slightly and holds toppings better.
  2. Warm the baked beans on the stovetop or in a microwave-safe dish.
  3. Place each grilled hot dog into a warmed bun. Spoon a generous portion of warm baked beans over the dog, then add chopped onion, relish, mustard and ketchup to taste.
  4. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Notes

A shallow slit along the hot dog lets it open slightly during cooking and gives toppings a place to settle. Use a ladle to control the amount of beans you add so the bun doesn’t become soggy. For a party, set out bowls of baked beans, relish, chopped onions and condiments so guests can assemble their own.

Tips, Variations, and Serving Suggestions

Grilling tips: preheat the grill to medium-high so hot dogs get a good sear without burning. Turn frequently for even color. If you prefer a slightly smoky flavor, finish the dogs over direct heat for the last minute or two.

Bun options: split-top deli buns or New England-style hot dog rolls hold toppings better than thin, soft store buns. Toast or steam buns briefly on the grill to add texture and warmth.

Variations: swap baked beans for a bean medley with bacon or add a spoonful of chili for a heartier dog. For a fresher note, try adding chopped tomatoes or a few pickled jalapeños. If you want a vegetarian version, grill plant-based sausages and use vegetarian baked beans.

Make-ahead and transport: keep warm baked beans in a thermos or insulated container and assemble at the grill site. Pack condiments and chopped onion in small containers so everything is ready when the dogs are done.

Leftovers: store components separately in the refrigerator for up to 2–3 days. Reheat beans on the stove and warm hot dogs in a skillet or microwave before assembling.
