After sneaking a few stray blueberries from some mini lemon-blueberry cakes and a spoonful of granola, I realized a warm blueberry crisp with a crunchy oat topping would be absolutely perfect. Imagine a jammy berry filling paired with a toasty oat and almond crunch—textural contrast, bright berry flavor and just enough sweetness to enjoy for breakfast or dessert.
This version keeps things simple and naturally sweetened with honey. It’s also dairy-free and naturally gluten-free when you use arrowroot or cornstarch and certified gluten-free oats. If you prefer a vegan option, swap the honey for maple syrup or another liquid sweetener. The crisp comes together in minutes and bakes into a bubbling, fragrant treat that’s hard to resist.

To make the topping, mix rolled oats, sliced almonds, a pinch of salt and cinnamon, then stir in a bit of oil and honey so the mixture crisps up beautifully in the oven. The frozen blueberries are tossed with arrowroot starch (or cornstarch) to thicken the juices as they heat. There’s no need to thaw the berries first, which saves time and prevents the filling from becoming overly watery.

Bake until the topping is golden and the blueberry juices bubble up around the edges. Serve warm with a spoonful of cream, yogurt, ice cream or coconut whipped cream. The contrast between warm jammy berries and cold creamy topping is divine. Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for a couple of days and can be gently reheated.

Healthy Blueberry Crisp
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 2 tbsps sliced almonds chopped is fine
- Pinch salt
- Pinch cinnamon powder
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsps honey
- 200 g frozen blueberries do not thaw
- 1 tsp arrowroot starch or cornstarch
- Optional: yoghurt cream, ice cream or coconut whipped cream to serve
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F). Arrange three shallow 4″ oven-safe dishes on a baking tray to catch any bubbling juices. Alternatively, use a single 6″ round dish for one larger crisp.
- In a mixing bowl combine the oats, sliced almonds, a pinch of salt and cinnamon. Stir until evenly mixed, then add the olive oil and honey. Toss until the oats are evenly moistened and clump slightly.
- Place the frozen blueberries in a small bowl, sprinkle with arrowroot starch (or cornstarch) and toss gently to coat each berry. This helps thicken the filling as it bakes.
- Divide the berries evenly between the dishes, then spoon the oat mixture on top of each portion. Press the topping down lightly to compact it a bit.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the topping is golden and the blueberry juices are bubbling around the edges. If the topping is browning unevenly, give it a gentle stir to expose any unbrowned oats.
- Remove from the oven and let the crisps rest for about 10 minutes. Serve warm with yoghurt, cream, ice cream or coconut whipped cream, or cool completely and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Note: the oats will soften slightly as they absorb the juices over time.
Notes
* I used individual ceramic dishes for single servings, but you can use any oven-safe dish you prefer.
* Fresh berries work well too, though they may release more liquid—consider using a little extra starch if the filling seems watery.
* To make this vegan, replace honey with maple syrup or another liquid sweetener and serve with plant-based yogurt or coconut whipped cream.
* Storage: keep leftovers covered in the refrigerator for 1–2 days. Reheat briefly in the oven or microwave to revive the topping.
